Capital Scot Introduction: This is the story of Francis Drummond. The Capital Scot searched the Web looking for information about him in relationship to Dundee and Brazil with only the scantiest result. Dr. Gerding's article is exclusive to this Web site.
"In the Battle of Juncal (February 8 and 9, 1827) Francis Drummond commanded the Maldonado (former Brazilian Leal Paulistana which was captured on September 21 near the Gorriti island). With this warship Drummond had two days' fierce combat against the Brazilian schooner Bertioga (commanded by Lieutenant John Broon). The Bertioga, which was the twin vessel of the Leal Paulistan, was finally seized and captured. As a result of this action Drummond was promoted to Sergeant Major on March 23, 1827, bestowed with the Escudo del Plata medal and received a two months salary."
