Sanctuary is an adventure novel set in the turbulent days immediately after Culloden, 1746.
It is the story of two brothers, Jacobites exiled with their father to France after the 1715 Rebellion, who return with Prince Charlie, are separated at Culloden, and after the battle make their escape in different directions. One finds his way by land and sea to Montrose. The other brother flees down the Great Glen and on to Boston, Massachusetts. Their lives are saved by women who unselfishly give each brother aid and sanctuary from the Redcoat soldiers hunting them and the Prince. Unexpected help comes from a Scottish merchant based in Boston.
Each brother has his part to play in a separate yet intertwined story, that of a long lost relic, an ancient silver cross, and also a much sought after text, the 7th century Applecross Chronicle.
The final characters in the tale are Keversham, the head of King George's Naval Intelligence , who uses his agents to track down the dispersed Jacobites, and his spy, John Pilgrym, whom he sends to Montrose, the East Coast port from which many Jacobite leaders will try to make their escape to the Continent.
Yet Keversham is not just in pursuit of Jacobites. He has one personal, all-consuming desire, to add the precious talisman of the Applecross Chronicle to his already extensive and coveted collection of rare and expensive books. For this he would risk the lives and souls of any and all of his agents, and in particular that of the unsuspecting John Pilgrym.
