The following list is a compilation of Clan Genealogists or Clan points of contact for genealogy (for the Scottish Clans and Family Associations). The amount of information available from these genealogists varies greatly, with some having extensive records. For example, the clan genealogist/historian for Clan Barclay also is a coordinator for the BARCLAY Genealogical Database. She has about 19,000 BARCLAY/BARKLEY and collateral names on file dealing with 125 family lines. The Clan Pollock International Database includes over 130,000 names. The Clan Morrison historian has a 6,000-name database of MORRISON families in the U.S. and Canada. The Chairman of the Clan MacLaren Genealogy Committee has most, if not all, of the early MacLaren lines in the U.S. and Canada documented. The Clan Fraser Society of Canada has the largest data base of genealogical records specific to Frasers in the world.
Some clans have genealogy committees. When I learn about them I will include committee members in this listing. Some of these members only cover one or a few states. In these cases, I note the states that particular member covers. Also, some clan genealogists specialize in one surname of a clan. Clan MacLaren, for example, has several surname genealogists. I am listing these surnames under the parent clan with a note (i.e., See also Law/Lawson). The actual genealogist and his/her address will be listed under the surname (i.e., Law/Lawson).
For some clans, more than one society exists. In some of these cases the societies are affiliated -- as is the case for the Clan MacLaren Society (in Scotland), the Clan MacLaren Society of North America, and the Clan MacLaren Society of Australia. In other cases the societies are competing societies. Additionally, the Clan Chief may not endorse some of these competing societies. I am not making any statement about competing societies, nor does this listing endorse one over any other. I am just listing genealogists for any society that has established genealogists. My intent is to provide information that will assist those of Scottish descent in tracing their genealogies, not to judge the merits of competing societies.
This listing also includes email addresses and home pages. However, spam is getting to be quite a problem. Therefore, I've replaced the @ in email addresses with (at). Hopefully this will prevent your email address from being harvested when this listing is posted on the web. In order to get back the email address, just replace the (at) with @. I'm including the home pages since these web sites often have genealogical information. However, not all of this information is well documented. Without documentation (i.e., sources of the information) it is impossible to evaluate the completeness of the research behind the information. Therefore, use any information with inadequate documentation with caution. Consider it a guide that must be further checked. I've also included some home pages for surnames that do not have established societies. These sites, however, do contain genealogical information and could be the nucleus for establishing a society for that surname.
I've found that email addresses and home page URLs change faster than I can check them -- especially over the last several years with the failure of a number of service providers. So, please check your email addresses and home page URLs. If they are incorrect, or if I don't show one, send me a corrected email address or URL and I will include them in future updates of this listing.
The list is alphabetical. However, since Mc is an abbreviation of Mac, I am treating Mac and Mc as the same and am listing them as if they were Mac.
If you do write to any of these genealogists, include a stamped self-addressed envelope for them to reply. Also, do not expect them to do your research for you. In most cases, I'm sure they will respond to a reasonable, limited request if you give details of the information being sought -- if they have the information readily available. (In some cases, the genealogists only provide assistance to clan or association members.) And don't forget to give them copies of your genealogy so they can expand their databases. If you call any of these genealogists, please do so before 9:00 p.m. in the evening (their time).
I distribute this list at the Scottish Games I attend. This list is also on the Internet, on the web page of The Capital Scot (URL http://thecapitalscot.com). I am starting to send copies of this list via email to those genealogists who have email (and I have their email address). This list may be copied freely. Any computer bulletin board (BBS), genealogical or clan society, or web page, that wishes to maintain a copy may do so. Also, anyone (including BBSs, genealogical societies, or clan societies) that wishes to pass out copies of this list free of charge may do so. However, I would suggest that rather than posting this on a website, that you provide a link to The Capital Scot web page above. Since this listing gets updated so frequently, you may find it difficult to keep it updated if you post it on your site (and I do try to keep the copy posted at The Capital Scot current). If you do post a copy, or pass out copies, please include this introductory page (with date and copyright notice) and the afterword. While this list may be freely copied, it may not be sold or used for any other commercial purpose.
I'm sure that this list is not complete and I need help in maintaining it. See the last page of this list for societies that I know exist, but for which I do not know a genealogist. If you have any additions or corrections, please write to me at the address above, or email me. Please include the following information: Name of genealogist and title; name of society; postal address, phone number (if he/she wants it published) and email address of genealogist; and society web page. I update this list several times a year, so if your list is over a year old, a more current list has been distributed.
Additionally, not everyone who lived in Scotland belonged to a Clan -- about 70 percent of the Scottish families did not have a direct Clan affiliation. While some Family Associations have formed for some of these families, many are still without a Clan or Family Association tie. If this is the case for your surname(s), there is an association for you that is worthwhile checking out. This is the Scottish District Families Association. AKINS A
Steven Akins claims to be the head of Clan Akins. In November
2004
I spoke with the Lyon Clerk and Keeper of Records and was told
that
Mr. Akins is not recognized as Clan Chief by the Lyon Court. His
application
to the Lyon Court contained fraudulent information.
Therefore,
I will not list any reference to him or his society. However,
