Heraldry

This page provides links to some resources about Scottish heraldry.  The Capital Scot has been flattered by requests for consultation about heraldry and succession but, regrettably, is not an expert on heraldry and does not provide opinions on succession.

The Heraldry Society of Scotland was founded in 1977 with the objective of promoting the study of heraldry and encouraging its correct use in Scotland and Overseas.  It has the aim of bringing about a greater awareness of the Art, Law, and Science of Scotland's unique heraldry and also to provide a forum for the Society's heraldry enthusiasts, the heraldic professionals and the public at large.

The Society of Scottish Armigers has a Web site at http://www.scotarmigers.net/.  The society's purposes are:
To research, identify, and record Armorial Bearings borne in the Americas which have been Granted, Matriculated, or otherwise Recognized by the Scottish heraldic authority.
To publish and disseminate an historical record of said Armorial Bearings along with biographical information regarding the Armigers.
To educate the public regarding the history and meaning of Armorial Bearings within the Scottish tradition.
To initiate, promote, and engage in scholarly, educational, and information endeavors, and to preserve and disseminate knowledge regarding Scottish heraldry, and to act as a resource center for those seeking information regarding the same.
To support and encourage knowledge regarding Scottish history and cultural heritage through leadership and participation in various cultural activities, such as Highland Games, Scottish Country Dancing, Kirking of the Tartans, St. Andrew's Society events, and the like.

This is the official page of The Lord Lyon King of Arms - "The Court of the Lord Lyon is the heraldic authority for Scotland.  It deals with all matters relating to Scottish Heraldry and Coats of Arms and maintains the Scottish Public Registers of Arms and Genealogies.  The Lord Lyon King of Arms is also responsible for State Ceremonial in Scotland.  If you're an overseas visitor researching your Scottish Ancestry these pages may help you track down your coats of arms, clans, and tartans."

The Lord Lyon and his jurisdiction - "This page contains documents and analysis pertaining to the judicial powers of Lord Lyon in Scotland, in particular relating to nobility, chiefships of clans, and precedence."

All heraldry in Scotland is controlled by the Court of the Lord Lyon King of Arms, commonly known as the Lyon Court, and located at New Register House in Edinburgh.  The origins of the Lyon Court are literally lost in the mists of time as the office of Lord Lyon incorporates that of the Royal Sennachie or Bard whose duty it was to proclaim the lineage and deeds of the ancestors of the King.  From this Celtic start, the position has developed into a judicial one, with the Lord Lyon sitting as a judge on armorial matters.

The College of Arms is the official repository of the coats of arms and pedigrees of English, Welsh, Northern Irish and Commonwealth families and their descendants.  Its records also include official copies of the records of Ulster King of Arms the originals of which remain in Dublin.
