International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) - Scotland at http://www.incose.org.uk/scotland.htm aims to foster the definition, recognition, understanding and practice of world class systems engineering in Industry, Academia and Government.   According to the INCOSE/Scotland Web site "There are over 300 members of INCOSE in the UK but only 8 in Scotland.  Although Systems Engineering is relevant to all industrial sectors and to government, INCOSE membership is dominated by the traditional users of heavyweight systems engineering methods in the defence and aerospace sectors.  INCOSE wants to increase its membership in Scotland, and its member base outside the traditional defence and aerospace sectors.  To this end it is planning to hold a series of meetings in Scotland, to start a 2-way exchange:
to show engineers, managers, and decision makers in Scottish industry and government what INCOSE, and systems engineering in general, can offer; and,
to show the rest of INCOSE the tremendous system-related innovation developing in Scottish industry and academia."

Technology Ventures in Scotland at http://www.technologyscotland.org/ "has been created to take a strategic and overarching role in encouraging the commercialisation of Scotland's Science and Technology research, from the perspective of business.  Through debate and discussion, this website is intended to guide business leaders, financiers, academics, and other interested parties to the range of resources available to help business develop through the application of new technologies." Systems and Silicon in Scotland at http://www.microelectronics.org.uk/ - plans to make Scotland a world centre for semiconductor research, design and manufacturing.  "For nearly half a century, Scotland has been at the forefront of the electronics revolution.  In that time we have been attracting global players and providing people with the skills, energy, drive and enthusiasm to create a dynamic and thriving industry that is significant in both its impact on the Scottish economy and its contribution to the global market place."

Teachers Teaching with Technology - Scotland is teachers teaching teachers to provide the best professional development program for the appropriate use of educational technology in the teaching and learning of mathematics and science worldwide.  Scotland has recently undertaken a major review into the use of hand-held technology in the curriculum.  This review, called Advanced Calculators and Mathematics Education (ACME), outlined the benefits of effective use of graphics calculators and the consequent effect on students' enjoyment of the subject and motivation to learn.  The ACME report also recommended that the ScottishCCC should initiate, in conjunction with local authorities, staff development for teachers in the use of graphics and CAS calculators, particularly in the context of Higher Still (the post 16 curriculum).  The Scottish Minister for Education and Children has endorsed the recommendations of the ACME review, and subsequently there has been a National Conference to decide on the best way to implement these.  The participants at the Conference debated the various methods of training in the use of hand-held technology and the T3 (Teachers Teaching with Technology) model was approved as part of a national strategy for moving forward.

The IMS Global Learning Consortium, Inc. at http://www.imsproject.org/ (orignally the Instructional Management Systems (IMS) project) is developing and promoting open specifications for facilitating online distributed learning activities such as locating and using educational content, tracking learner progress, reporting learner performance, and exchanging student records between administrative systems.

The School of Law at the University of Edinburgh has a program of postgraduate research and study.  (See http://www.law.ed.ac.uk/pg/llmitandlaw.asp.  [Capital Scot advisory: Link no longer active on 3/15/04] ) "This degree programme is a interdisciplinary endeavour in the field of postgraduate teaching that is unique in the educational marketplace.  The programme includes treatments of the traditional fields of Intellectual Property law and Information Technology Law while combining these with an examination of the role of law in the broader context of responding to advances in science, medicine and technology.  No other programme available in the United Kingdom bring these areas together.  The focus of the degree is on the international nature of the subject matter and each course offers a highly comparative analysis of current legal developments around the globe."

The Society, Religion and Technology Project at http://www.srtp.org.uk/srtpage3.shtml "is part of a Scottish civic delegation at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg where civil society has carried forward the Rio agenda of 1992, yet governments have failed to agree on some very essentials of sustainable development.  The controversy over stem cell research with embryos continues with reports about gene deletion in pigs and that we can create embryos by parthenogenesis.  But what is really going on and what are the issues involved? Technology has brought many great benefits to society, which we often take for granted, but it can also pose big ethical dilemmas - not just unexpected risks and side-effects, but unintended social consequences and even changes in our moral outlook.  We aim to provide some guidance round the maze of questions."

Tartan Technology: Scotland's Quiet Riot at http://www.thestreet.com/int/euromarkets/759967.html - "In this four-story TSC (i.e., TheStreet.com) special, U.K. correspondent Nick Watson examines the companies, culture and future of the Glen.  On Tuesday he gives an overview in A Stroll Through Silicon Glen and looks at e-commerce in Scottish Firms Refine Their Internet Plans.  On Wednesday he turns his attention to computer games companies in Let the Games Begin and software hotshots in Scotland Has Cultivated Software Talent.  Now Can It Get the Show on the Road?
